PADI Open Water Diver (eLearning)

What is the PADI Open Water Diver course?

If you've always wanted to take scuba diving lessons, experience unparalleled adventure and see the world beneath the waves, this is where it starts. PADI's Open Water Diver course is the world's most popular and widely recognized scuba course. No prior experience with scuba diving is required for this course. Millions of people have learned to scuba dive and gone on to discover the wonders of the aquatic world through this course.

The PADI Open Water Diver course teaches you the basics of diving and how to stay safe through knowledge development and practical training. The certification consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge Development to understand basic principles and theory of scuba diving.
  • Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills in a pool or shallow, confined water.
  • Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore the underwater environment! We do these dives locally from April – October, you can join us on a trip any time of the year to complete your certification, or you can complete your certification on a trip of your own through the PADI referral program.

What equipment will I use?

During the Open Water Diver course, you will learn to use basic scuba gear, including a mask, snorkel, boots, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, and a tank. The equipment that you wear will vary depending on where you plan to dive (tropical, temperate, or cold water). Scuba gear is provided during the pool training and open water training but you will be responsible for providing your own mask, snorkel, boots, and fins.

Ready to get in the water?

Visit Scuba Shack Nashville in Old Hickory or Brentwood today to register for an upcoming course! At this time, you will receive the student materials to begin your academics. This is also a great time to purchase any snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, boots, and fins) that you need for your course.

What is a PADI Junior Open Water Diver?

PADI’s Junior Open Water Diver course is similar to the adult certification program and prepares kids to become full-fledged divers when they are of age. To begin the program, students must be at least 10 years old and be able to swim. Junior Open Water Divers still go through academic, pool, and open water training like Open Water divers.

To ensure that young divers don’t exceed their limits, the Junior Open Water certification comes with restrictions. Divers 10-11 years old must dive with a PADI Professional or a certified parent or guardian, and dives cannot exceed 12 meters/40 feet. Divers 12-14 years old must dive with a certified adult and dives cannot exceed 18 meters / 60 feet.
